By at December 27, 2011 | 3:50 pm | 0 Comment

MAITI Nepal was born out of a crusade to protect Nepali girls and women from crimes like domestic violence, trafficking for flesh trade, child prostitution, child labor and various forms of exploitation and torture. A group of socially committed professionals like teachers, journalists and social workers together formed Maiti Nepal in 1993 to fight against all the social evils inflicted upon our female populace. Most of all, its special focus has always been on preventing trafficking for forced prostitution, rescuing flesh trade victims and rehabilitating them. This social organisation also actively works to find justice for the victimized lot of girls and women by engaging in criminal investigation and waging legal battles against the criminals. It has highlighted the trafficking issue with its strong advocacy from the local to national and international levels.

If your focus is more on eating than soaking, then Koketsu is probably the best Japanese place in town. It takes a brave person to order sushi in the Himalaya but the seafood here is flown in fresh from Thailand, as are the takosu (marinated octopus), squid and roe. The focal point of the restaurant is definitely the central teppanyaki grill. It’s no coincidence that the Japanese embassy is across the road.

The Mexican and Indian tandoori dishes (dinner only) are excellent and the sunny garden is a real plus in winter. It’s also one of the few places to offer kids’ meals.

A great location and some of the tastiest Thai and Indian food in town make this a good compromise if you fancy a chicken tikka masala but your date wants a green papaya salad. You can sit overlooking the road or on the rooftop under what looks like an aircraft hangar. One of the chefs is Thai, the other worked at the Rum Doodle for 17 years, so they know their stuff.

Aarohan Theatre Group

By at December 27, 2011 | 11:55 am | 0 Comment

Aarohan was founded in 1982 by a group of theatre workers. In Nepali, Aarohan means to climb. It also means performing space. The purpose is to create a Nepali theatre movement. They perform proscenium theatre by Nepali playwrights and adapt foreign plays to the Nepali context. They have given training throughout the country, helping communities create their own theatre groups. They also perform Forum Theatre and train marginalised and oppressed people to use theatre as a weapon to improve their lives. In 2002, they founded Gurukul, Nepal’s first school of theatre. They believe that an indigenous theatre movement is both an alternative to a globalized consumer-oriented mass-media and a tool for empowering communities and individuals rendered marginal in modern Nepal.
